Shikhar Dhawan retires

Veteran Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has officially retired from international and domestic cricket, marking the end of a stellar 14-year journey. Dhawan took to social media on Saturday morning to announce his decision, sharing an emotional video message that reflects his gratitude and contentment with his cricketing career.

A stellar career

Dhawan last played in a competitive match during IPL 2024, where he led the Punjab Kings. In his farewell post, Dhawan expressed a sense of closure, saying, “It’s important to turn the page to move forward in life, and that’s why I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket.”

Known for his aggressive stroke play and iconic celebrations, Dhawan’s contributions to Indian cricket have been immense. With a total of 6,793 runs from 167 ODI matches, including 17 centuries, he became one of India’s most reliable opening batters, particularly in ICC tournaments. His performance in the 2013 Champions Trophy, where he was the leading run-scorer, is etched in Indian cricket history.

Extraordinary numbers in IPL

Dhawan’s IPL career was equally remarkable. Representing teams like Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and PBKS, he amassed 6,768 runs across 221 innings, becoming the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament, behind Virat Kohli. He maintained a strike rate of 127.14, consistently contributing to his team’s success.

In his farewell message, Dhawan reflected on his journey with pride and fulfillment: “I am leaving with peace in my heart that I played so long for India. I’ve told myself, don’t feel sad that you won’t play for India anymore, but feel happy that you played for the country.”

As Dhawan turns a new chapter in his life, his legacy in cricket will continue to inspire aspiring cricketers. His contributions to Indian cricket, both internationally and domestically, will be remembered for years to come.
