The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) convened in Mumbai on Tuesday to interview candidates for the prestigious head coach position.
According to a Cricbuzz report, Gautam Gambhir, a former Indian cricketer and current mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), was among those interviewed. WV Raman, another notable figure in Indian cricket, was also believed to have been considered by CAC members Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjpe. Although the complete list of candidates is not public, it is evident that Gambhir is a prominent contender.
Gautam Gambhir: A visionary leader
Gautam Gambhir is a distinguished name in Indian cricket, renowned for his achievements as an opener and his leadership in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He captained the KKR to IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. Recently, as a mentor, he guided KKR to another IPL victory, cementing his reputation as a strategic leader.
During his interview, Gambhir likely highlighted his vision for Indian cricket, emphasizing a fearless playing style and ambitious goals, such as winning the World Cup. His recent IPL experience showcased his ability to manage and inspire players, making him a strong candidate for the head coach role.
Additionally the reports further stated that , there are indications that Gambhir has approached Jonty Rhodes, the legendary South African fielder, about joining the support staff as a fielding coach. Rhodes, with extensive coaching experience in South Africa and various IPL franchises, could form a proven partnership with Gambhir, enhancing the national team’s support structure.

A seasoned strategist
WV Raman brings a wealth of experience to the table. He has an extensive coaching background, having led the India Women’s team, worked at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), and coached various state teams and IPL franchises as a batting coach. His comprehensive understanding of Indian cricket’s infrastructure and player development is invaluable.
Raman joined the interview from Bengaluru, where he is currently a broadcaster for the India Women’s ongoing series. Raman’s tenure with the India Women’s team, during which he contributed significantly to their success, was probably a key discussion point during his interview.
The CAC is also set to interview an undisclosed overseas candidate, whose identity remains confidential on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the current head coach, Rahul Dravid, will step down following the T20 World Cup. Dravid took over from Ravi Shastri in November 2021 and has seen the team through commendable performances, including an unbeaten run in the group stage and advancing to the Super 8 matches.
