The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 witnessed a nail-biting finish as Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by just 1 run in a high-scoring encounter on Sunday, March 10. This victory secures a playoff berth for the Capitals.
Richa Ghosh‘s valiant fifty (29 balls, 51 runs) almost snatched victory for RCB in a thrilling chase, but DC held their nerve to emerge victorious.
Openers give DC a strong start:
Earlier, DC openers Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning provided a solid foundation, amassing 53 runs in the powerplay. The key turning point arrived in the fourth over when Lanning launched an assault on Renuka Singh Thakur, smashing four boundaries.
Jemimah Rodrigues, Alice Capsey continue momentum:
After the dismissals of Verma and Lanning, Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey continued the momentum for DC. Rodrigues struck a blistering 58 off just 36 deliveries, while Capsey chipped in with a valuable 48 runs. RCB bowlers Shreyanka Patil and Asha Sobhana managed to pick up crucial wickets, but the damage had already been done.
Shreyanka Patil’s four-wicket haul restricts DC:
Patil emerged as the pick of the RCB bowlers, claiming 4/25 in her four overs. She accounted for the vital wickets of Lanning, Rodrigues and Capsey, restricting DC to a total of 181/5.
Ellyse Perry, Sophie Molineux provide RCB hope:
RCB’s chase began with a new opening pair of Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Molineux. While Mandhana departed early, Ellyse Perry and Molineux stitched together a crucial 80-run partnership. Perry continued her good touch, scoring 49 runs before being run out. Molineux also chipped in with a 33.
Richa Ghosh’s late blitz almost steals the win:
With RCB needing 57 runs off the last five overs, Ghosh took center stage. She unleashed a brilliant knock of 51 runs, including a six off the final ball of the penultimate over. However, she was run out attempting a second run, leaving RCB one-run short of the target.

Devastation for RCB and Richa Ghosh.
You gotta feel for her. You gotta feel for her. She dragged RCB to the last ball all by herself but couldn't win it.
Heartbreak.
