Spinners in Test cricket hold a unique and crucial role, often serving as game-changers on pitches that favor turn and bounce. Their ability to deceive batters with flight, spin, and variations adds a fascinating dimension to the sport. Over the years, spinners have left an indelible mark on the game, shaping outcomes with their craft and guile. Whether it’s the classical elegance of Shane Warne or the relentless accuracy of Muttiah Muralitharan, spin bowlers have consistently proven their worth in the longest format of the game.
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting recently picked a bowler whom he considers the ‘master of spin’. Ponting showered praise on the Indian star, stating that he excels in spinning under any conditions and has showcased remarkable cricketing prowess.
Ricky Ponting’s choice of spinner
Speaking on the latest episode of the ICC Review, Ponting recently hailed Ravichandran Ashwin as the ‘master of spin’ in Test cricket. Ponting’s endorsement of Ashwin’s prowess is a testament to the Indian spinner’s remarkable skill and impact in the longest format of the game. Ponting’s experience of coaching Ashwin firsthand allowed him to witness the spinner’s dedication to his craft and his relentless pursuit of excellence.
“He’s a master of spin in any conditions. He’s been an incredible cricketer, no doubt about it. I had a chance to coach him for a couple of years at Delhi, and loved working with him. He’s got a lot of theories and philosophies on the game, which I really like. He’s always done things a little bit differently and done things his own way. But he just continued to evolve as a bowler,” said Ponting.

Ponting lauds the spinner’s innovative approach
Ponting’s admiration for Ashwin stems from the spinner’s relentless quest for improvement. He lauded Ashwin’s innovative approach to the game, highlighting his willingness to experiment with different techniques and deliveries. Notably, Ashwin’s ability to constantly evolve as a bowler sets him apart and ensures his effectiveness across diverse conditions. Ponting’s insights offer a glimpse into Ashwin’s work ethic and his unwavering commitment to refining his skills, a trait that has contributed to his success as one of the premier spinners in contemporary Test cricket.
“That’s the thing that I loved about him when I was coaching him, he’d stand at the end of his mark and he’d be working on something different, a little tweak to his action or a change of grip or a different delivery. He’s never been one that was going to die wondering about trying to find ways to get better,” added Ponting.
Notably, the ongoing fifth and final Test between India and England at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala holds particular significance for Ashwin as he joins the exclusive club of cricketers who have played 100 Tests for their nation. Ashwin’s impressive record boasts 507 wickets in 99 Tests, showcasing an outstanding average of 23.91, including 35 five-wicket hauls and eight 10-wicket hauls.
