Days after the upset of Afghanistan beating England in the ODI World Cup 2023, another shocker took place with the Netherlands defeating South Africa in Match 15 of the tournament at HPCA stadium in Dharamsala on Tuesday.
Scott Edwards powers Netherlands to a competitive total
South Africa elected to bowl after winning the toss, setting the stage for an exciting showdown. The Netherlands started their innings with Vikramjit Singh and Max O’Dowd at the crease, but the early going proved challenging for the Dutch side. Vikramjit managed only 2 runs, while O’Dowd contributed 18 runs. The Dutch batsmen struggled to make significant scores, with Scott Edwards being the standout performer with a remarkable 78 runs.
South Africa’s bowlers put in a solid performance, with Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, and Gerald Coetzee each picking up crucial wickets. Ngidi and Rabada both secured 2 wickets, while Jansen and Coetzee took 2 wickets and 1 wicket, respectively. The Netherlands posted a total of 245/8 in their allotted 43 overs.

Bowlers give Netherlands a memorable win
South Africa faced a target of 246 runs to win but struggled to chase it down. Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, and Rassie van der Dussen couldn’t make substantial contributions, and the middle order also faced challenges. David Miller was the top scorer for South Africa with 43 runs, but it wasn’t enough to secure the victory.
The Netherlands bowlers displayed a commendable effort, with Logan van Beek leading the way, taking 3 wickets. Paul van Meekeren, Roelof van der Merwe, and Bas de Leede each contributed with 2 wickets. Their collective effort restricted South Africa to 207 runs, resulting in a 38-run victory for the Netherlands.

Wow ! What an effort by the Dutch.
So much to like about the way they go about their business. Scott Edwards was sensational in the last 10 overs with the bat and then the Netherlands’ bowlers did the job in style. #NEDvsSA pic.twitter.com/kYpV0Rby0A— Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) October 17, 2023
What an incredible story the Dutch have written for themselves.

They have had big days earlier but to beat a top ranked side like South Africa over 43 overs, instead of only 20, would probably make this the biggest day for the Netherlands @KNCBcricket

🏏 NETHERLANDS DEFEAT THE PROTEAS
🇿🇦 David Miller (43) fought hard but it was not to be as the Netherlands earned a victory over the Proteas 🏏

Incredible victory for Netherlands. They were never meant to qualify for a 10 team World Cup – qualified ahead of three Test nations even while missing a series of county players.
Now they’ve thrashed South Africa – after beating them in last year’s T20 World Cup too
