India’s ODI World Cup 2023 journey kicked off in splendid fashion as they secured a thrilling four-wicket victory against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, October 8. The nation erupted in joy as Team India showcased their mettle, solidifying their status as frontrunners for the coveted World Cup title.
Amidst the anticipation and speculation surrounding India’s performance in the 13th edition of the World Cup, former India head coach Ravi Shastri recently articulated why he believes India could emerge victorious and clinch their third world title in the ODI format this year.
Ravi Shastri shares one reason why India could lift the ODI World Cup 2023 title
It is worth mentioning that Shastri is currently a part of the Star Sports India’s commentary panel for the ODI World Cup 2023 and shared his insights during a conversation with renowned sports presenter Mayanti Langer. When asked to pinpoint the one reason why India could triumph in the ODI World
Cup 2023, Shastri emphasized that what sets Team India apart is their advantage of playing in familiar home conditions. However, he also cautioned that the real test for India would be in the knockout stages.
“Because they’re playing at home, they’ve played very good cricket, they start off as absolute favorites, but then again, the real game starts when you qualify for the top four. And something is telling me, my gut feeling is telling me this could be the one,” stated Shastri.

India’s brilliant performance against Australia in their opening match
India’s remarkable performance against Australia in their opening match only served to reinforce Shastri’s belief in the team’s capabilities. In a match where Australia won the toss and opted to bat first, they were bundled out for a modest total of 199 runs. David Warner and Steve Smith emerged as the top-scorers for Australia, contributing 41 and 46 runs. However, it was Ravindra Jadeja who shone among the Indian bowlers, claiming three crucial wickets for just 28 runs in his allotted ten overs.
In reply, India’s innings began with early setbacks as Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer were dismissed without adding runs to the scoreboard. Nevertheless, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul set the tone for the run chase with a crucial partnership as India successfully chased down the 200-run target with 8.4 overs to spare, finishing at 201/4 in 41.2 overs.
