Cricket World goes berserk after India becomes top-ranked side in all three formats

India took on Australia in the opening match of the three-match series at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Friday (September 22). The Men in Blue emerged victorious in the contest by five wickets and also claimed the top position in the ICC ODI team ranking by displacing Pakistan.

Winning the toss and opting to bowl first, India put up a great show with the ball and restricted the Aussie team to a total of 276. David Warmer was the top-scorer for his team with a well-made 52 runs off 53 deliveries. Josh Inglis (45) and Steve Smith (41) also chipped in with some crucial runs. On the other hand, Mohammed Shami shined with the ball for India and bagged a brilliant fifer to dismantle the Aussie line-up.

India registers a five-wicket win over Australia

In reply, India comfortably chased down the set target in 48.4 overs, with Ruturaj Gaikwad smashing 71 runs and Shubman Gill hammering 74 runs. KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav contributed with match-winning half-centuries as well. The victory has now made India gain a (1-0) lead over Australia.

India becomes No. 1 ranked team in all three formats

Apart from this, the win also resulted in India becoming only the second team to be ranked No. 1 in all three formats (ODI, T20I, Test) at the same time. Notably, South Africa was the first team to secure a numero uno spot across formats back in 2012.

The iconic feat for India came on the heels of their record eight-title triumph in the Asia Cup. The Men in Blue will now be brimming with confidence and hope when they enter the ODI World Cup 2023, scheduled to commence on October 5 in India.
